A grower brought in a Powerstroke last fall that had been losing power halfway through a haul to Boise. By the time it got to us, the truck was barely making 45 on flat ground. We pulled the fuel filter and it was half full of water — the on-farm bulk tank had been sitting through a wet spring and nobody noticed. Drained the system, replaced an injector that didn’t survive the contamination, and got him back to harvest. That kind of fuel system repair Jerome Idaho story is more common than people think out here.

Fuel system problems usually announce themselves slowly — a long crank in the morning, a hesitation under load, fuel mileage creeping the wrong direction. By the time the check engine light comes on, the damage is usually further along than the customer realized.

What we cover in the fuel bay

  • Fuel pressure and volume testing on gas and diesel systems.
  • Fuel pump replacement — in-tank and external lift pumps.
  • Injector replacement and balance testing on gas, diesel, and DI engines.
  • Fuel filter service, water separator installs, and contaminated-fuel cleanup.
  • Fuel line and rail repair, including hard-line fabrication when needed.
  • Carburetor rebuild and tuning for classics — Holley, Edelbrock, Quadrajet.
  • EVAP system diagnostics and purge valve work.
  • Fuel tank cleaning, sender replacement, and rust repair.

Why fuel problems are common in the Magic Valley

Fuel quality out here isn’t always what comes off the truck at a major station. A lot of customers fuel from on-farm bulk tanks, fleet pumps, or rural cardlock stations where the tank may have been sitting for months. Water in fuel, sediment, algae growth in diesel — we see all of it.

Winter adds gelling. Untreated diesel can wax up below about 15°F, plug the filter, and leave a truck stranded. We service plenty of trucks every January whose first symptom is “won’t start in the morning,” which traces back to a gelled filter and a low-quality fuel supply.

Classic and vintage vehicles are their own story. Old fuel that sat over the winter turns to varnish in the carb. Rubber fuel lines harden and crack. Tank sending units corrode. Bringing a classic back from “sat for ten years” is a regular project for us — and a satisfying one.

How we approach fuel system diagnostics

We don’t throw fuel pumps at problems. The first test is fuel pressure at the rail, then volume over time, then pump current draw. On diesel, we run injector balance tests and check return-line flow before condemning an injector. On gas, we check fuel trims, knock activity, and rail pressure under load.

Carburetor work starts on the bench. We tear down, clean every passage, replace gaskets and seals, set float level, and re-tune on the vehicle. A properly rebuilt carb on a classic small-block is hard to beat for reliability — once it’s right, it stays right.

Where fuel work overlaps the rest of the shop

Hard-start and rough-running complaints often cross between fuel and engine repair work. Heavy diesel injector and high-pressure pump jobs land in our diesel repair side. Carburetor and ignition tuning on older vehicles is part of our vintage and classic bay. The full menu is on the services page.

Honest estimates on expensive parts

Fuel pumps, injectors, and high-pressure pumps are not cheap. That’s why we test before replacing — and why every job gets a written estimate before any parts are ordered. If a $50 filter and a tank cleaning solves your problem, that’s what we’ll do. If it’s a real fuel pump or injector failure, you’ll know up front. Call or book online and we’ll get you on the schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if it’s the fuel pump or something else?

Hard starts, long cranks, low fuel pressure under load, or losing power at highway speed all point at the fuel side. We test fuel pressure, volume, and pump current draw before swapping a pump — it’s expensive enough to deserve a real diagnosis.

Do you service diesel fuel systems?

Yes. Injector replacement, high-pressure pump work, water-in-fuel issues, fuel filter changes, and lift pump installs on Cummins, Powerstroke, and Duramax are routine here.

Can you rebuild a carburetor on an older vehicle?

Yes — Holley, Edelbrock, Quadrajet, and stock carbs on 1950s through 1980s vehicles. We also handle ignition timing, points, and fuel-tank cleanup on classics.

My fuel filter has water in it. Is that a big deal?

On a diesel, yes. Water in fuel destroys injectors and high-pressure pumps. We drain it, find the source — usually a contaminated farm tank or bulk fuel — and recommend an extra water separator if you’re fueling from your own tank.

Do you give written estimates?

Always. Fuel system parts can be expensive, so we diagnose first, then send a written estimate before any parts are ordered.
